| History of the Victim Services Program | |
The Victim Services Program is an integral part of Mountain Comprehensive Care Center. Services for sexual assault victims in the far eastern Kentucky Counties of Pike, Floyd, Johnson, Martin and Magoffin began in 1986. When the incidence of child sexual abuse in Magoffin County gained statewide attention in 1986, MCCC received a small grant from the Department of Mental Health to begin its program for victims of sexual assault. Staff has grown from one partially paid director in 1986 to nine staff members today. Staff consists of a program director, five sexual assault counselors, one outreach education coordinator, one volunteer coordinator / advocate and an administrative assistant. The Victim Services program offers comprehensive services to victims of rape, sexual assault, child abuse and domestic violence. Individual and group therapy is available for survivors of rape, incest, child sexual abuse, teenage survivors of sexual assault, adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, and victims of domestic violence. The program offers free educational programs to the communities in the Big Sandy Region on child sexual abuse, sexual harassment, child abuse, sexual assault, dating violence, stalking, and domestic violence. The program has a full-time advocate that provides advocacy in the medical and legal arenas of domestic violence and sexual assault. In addition, the program provides a 24-hour crisis line, crisis intervention counseling, information and referral, consultation to agency staff and community agencies and professional training. The Victim Services Program receives funding from several interwoven sources in addition to being one of thirteen state funded programs in Kentucky that provides specialized services to sexual assault /abuse victims, child abuse victims, survivors of incest, physical abuse victims, and domestic violence victims and their families under legislative mandate. The number of sexual assault/abuse victims, child abuse victims, and domestic violence victims seeking professional help has increased dramatically since the program’s inception. This program in collaboration with the Kentucky Association of Sexual Assault Programs (KASAP) continues efforts to become more responsive to the needs of victims and families in our region as well as statewide. |
